MINUTES FOR FEBRUARY 4, 2004

Our President, Tom Deppe, called the February 4, 2004 meeting to order at 7:12 PM at the Burt Chevrolet with 22 members and guests present.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Michael Mitchell wants to use the club Iwata airbrush and air compressor next month.  Mark Persichetti will bring down the air compressor to Saturday’s breakfast.

Cliff Davis reported that a Vern Clark from Qwest near Wadsworth and Hampden has rooms that can be used for contests and shows, although at a cost.

Cliff also received e-mail from the IPMS High Plains chapter about their show and contest on April 3rd.  They will have a Make and Take program and lots of categories to enter and win.

Cliff also received e-mail from Grand Junction about their upcoming show and contest on March 13 and 14 in Palisade Co.

TREASURY:

Dallas Lloyd reported a balance of 3588.18 in our club account.

OLD BUSINESS:

There was a general censuses that January’s contest was well done.  It was brought up that we should make this a yearly event.  Cliff mentioned that maybe we should do this sometime in the spring before the National Conventions.  It was decided that we would put on a show when the club decides that it is time.  Jack Lassiter thought that we didn’t have enough awards available to do any category splits.  The contest costs were only $260.00.

NEW BUSINESS:

We will be having a club auction at the April meeting.  All moneys will go directly to the club treasury.  There was some talk and kudos about the donations given to the Baghdad Model Club.  Colpar Hobbies is looking for some articles to post on their web site.  Contributors will get an employee discount on all items for a day.  Cliff reported that the club did receive its chapter seal from IPMS Nationals.  Jack Lassiter asked that we do a program on applying bare metal foil and a program on how to do washes and weathering.  Dallas Lloyd mentioned that he has Scale Modeler magazines from Vol 1 into the 90’s for sale.

SHOW & TELL:

Dallas Lloyd brought in a large wooden road grader that he was scratch building from some plans that he has.  Jack Lassiter showed us book called Master Modeler – The Tamiya Story.  He also had a book called The Gallant Ship Yorktown.  Jeffrey Osborne had a completed H-Mold 1/700 Soryo IJN aircraft carrier, a Skywave 1/700 IJN Destroyer, a PST 1/72 KV-122 MBT, a Hasegawa 1/72 Focke Wulf Fw-190D-9 and a Fujimi 1/72 Junkers Ju-87D-7 Stuka.  Terry Tuytschaevers brought in a completed Dragon 1/72 Tiger Elefant, a Dragon 1/72 Jagdpanther, a Dragon 1/72 Panther G, an Italeri 1/72 British Valentine, a Italeri 1/35 Lav-25 Piranha, an Academy 1/72 Boeing B-17F Superfortress, and a Pro Modeler 1/48 North American F-86D Sabre.  Martin Sagara had an Italeri Douglas DC-3 finished in natural metal, an Airfix 1/72 SPAD VII, some neat seam filler from Napa Auto Parts called Micro Lite Light Weight Body Filler, and some Glad Press n Seal which would make great masking medium.  Chuck Stout was looking for some Colorado ANG decals in 1/72 and Colorful Crusaders #6 decals.  Mike Gawell showed us a Mirage 1/48 PZL-11C Polish Fighter, a Trumpeter 1/48 SM-79 cockpit, and a Toko 1/72 IL-2M-3 Stormovik.  David Reinecke brought in a Tamiya 1/48 Dornier Do-335 that was under construction.  Michael Mitchell had a Revell of Germany 1/72 Arado E-555 and an F/A-18 Hornet book.  Jason Alterman brought in a MPC 1/25 Ford Mustang Cobra, a 1/24 Lamborghini Countach converted to a convertible, and a Mermaid that the whole family was working on.

PROGRAM:

The program for the evening was an extended and in depth show and tell.

Nurnberg Show Report
By: Oli Sigurdsson – Submitted by: Gerry Cole

A friend of mine, one Oli Sigurdsson from across the pond in Scandinavia, was at the Nurnberg Toy Fair and came back with the following announcements of new airliner (and other) model products:

Revell showed their re-released 1/144 scale Boeing 767-300 with Gulf Air Traveler and n/c SAS decals and a 1/144 scale Airbus A319 in German Wings colors. The 767 kit is already available in Europe.  They also had the box art of the 1/144 scale AN-124 and the 1/72 scale Challenger business jet, which were also there last year.  MPM has issued a very nice Lockheed Vega 5 in 1/72 scale with military and Shell Oil decals.

Minicraft of the USA has announced a Lockheed C-130 in 1/144 scale with Coast Guard markings as well as a Gunship version. The 1/144 scale Minicraft DC-4 and the 727-200 are in production and will be in the shops very soon.  They both looked very nice indeed.  I noticed a DC-3 with skis in 1/144 scale.  In addition to the skis, some work has been done to improve those horrible DC-3 engine nacelles.  Minicraft also showed a brand new Cessna 172 in 1/48 scale, not the old ESCI molds.  Shown in their catalogue is a 1/48 scale C-20B/C Gulfstream G3.

Both Airfix and Heller had the boxes for their new 1/72 Concorde kits. Funny enough the Airfix box has BA markings and the Heller box has AF markings. I was told that these kits won’t be sold in the same markets (the thing is HUGE)!  The German figure manufacturer Preiser has released a set of 1/144 scale airliner flight crews and passengers. This is probably the best news of the day for some of us, even if they have to be painted.  At the Squadron stand I could admire the new Czech Models 1/48 Grumman Goose. It looks very nice, and I can’t wait to build one in Loftleidir colors.

Prez Deppe

This months column will be rather brief as the “cat’s got the pen” so to speak.  I would like to thank those of you who braved the snow and made it to February’s meeting.  With any luck, the weather gods will be kind to us in March and we’ll see more of you then.

Again, I get to single out Derek Brown for a bit of special recognition.  On behalf of the club, thank you Derek for al the effort put into gathering up the modeling supplies and mailing them off to Iraq.  By all accounts, the troops in Baghdad really appreciate this gesture and will make good use of the hobby items to help relieve boredom and stress as they perform their occupation duties.

            As always, Happy Modeling!

THANK YOU FROM THE TROOPS!!

Derek Brown sent in the following kudos from the Middle East in response to his effort to get models and modeling supplies to our troops stationed in Iraq.  The certificate and letter speak for themselves.

Derek also says that the IPMS website has posted an article about the Baghdad care package at http://ipmsusa.org under the "what's new" heading.  Enjoy!
