HEAD’S UP!

TOW TRACTOR COMPETITION

If you are working on your tow-tractor kit for the club ‘competition’, remember that the contest will be in April, so if you’re not done yet, better get crackin’!

THANKS FROM MARK LITTRELL

Mark was at our February meeting working on a film project for his Master’s Degree.  He wants to say thanks for everyone’s willingness to help him out, show off their models, and take the time to answer a few questions on film.

Good luck on the project Mark, and when it’s done, stop by and show us the finished product!

ATTENTION A-4 PROJECT PARTICIPANTS!!

Earl wants to bring your attention to the impending Nats deadline.  Check out is information on page 7!

‘Prez’ Deppe

We have a solution of sorts regarding the club’s star-crossed ALPs printer.  Cliff Dais and Dave Reinecke have agreed to assume the cost of returning the broken printer to ALPs in exchange for a refurbished one.  They will then take on decal-making project, etc. with the refurbished printer at their determined prices.  This action was taken on a membership vote.

Good news on Jack Lassiter’s idea of approaching Iwata about a donor airbrush for our membership use.  Mark Persichetti was able to make contact with Tom Grossman, the local Iwata rep, and he will be providing us with one of their machines.  As it stands right now, we will loan out the airbrush for a month at a time (deposit fee to be set) and after 1 to 2 years, auction it off.  The club will have to buy a hose and adapter and if Tom will be inclined to include a compressor as part of the deal remains to be seen.

It is always a pleasure to welcome guests to our meetings, a duty made doubly enjoyable when they are return visitors.  Many thanks to Mike Lopez and Michael Mitchel for making return appearances at our February meeting.  We look forward to welcoming you both as the newest additions to our membership ranks.

I would also like to acknowledge our other guests, Make Littrell and his associate [who was also his sister –ed].  Mike is involved in a class video project where he interviewed club members about their modeling interests and filmed their models.  Mike’s interest in us is appreciated and I thank all of you who helped him out with your participation.

As always, I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.

                                    --Tom

As a side note to Tom’s remarks, I have been informed by Dave Reinecke that the “new” ALPs printer has arrived and after some testing, Dave and Cliff should be ready to start printing decals relatively soon.  – ed.

From Mark Persichetti:

I just got word back from Tom Grossman (from the IPMS-Centennial club in Colo Spgs), that he will plan to come to our March meeting, and present the club with an Iwata 'Eclipse' series airbrush. He represents the Iwata product line in this area. Iwata cannot also provide a compressor, but Tom has contacted Colpar Hobbies to see if they can offer any discount to the club to buy one.

At the meeting, we'll have info on the compressor situation, and info on the check-out procedure we'll use for members to use the club's airbrush.

Nationals Are Approaching!

For those of you that are planning on attending the 2003 IPMS Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK, it is not too early to start talking about carpooling and room sharing!

At the March meeting, let’s bring up the subject and start a sign-up sheet of some sort so that people can help reduce costs by sharing resources.

Siemens Schuckert D.I

‘A rose by any other name...’

By:  Steve Lawson

It was the 6th of March 1917 when three Sopwith 1 ½  Strutters from 45 Sqdn RFC were engaged in a photographic mission.  They recognized five approaching silhouettes as Nieuports from the neighboring #1 Sqdn.  They were wrong.  The new fighters proved to be Siemens-Schuckert’s production  D.I types.  The confusion was after all understandable; the prototype of the German fighter was based dimensionally on the French designed, Nieuport 11/16 types. The D.I type was outwardly, very comparable to the French Nieuport 16, from its single machine-gun armament to the camouflage applications.  The military need to match the Bebe's performance capabilities led to its virtual copy by several German aviation firms.  In November1916 the Siemens Schuckert Werke had received an order for 150 of the D.I types.  Another order was received for 170 more aircraft in March 1917, but it was canceled by about July 1917.   The complex production of the chosen power plant, the Siemens-Halske Sh. I (100hp) became the major factor in production delays.  With this ‘Counter Rotary' the Propeller and Crankshaft turned in one direction while the Cylinders turn in the opposite direction.  Only 93 of the S.S.W. D.I types reached front line operation.  Were told another 55 uncovered airframes were delivered to Adlershof.

The earliest mention of converting an Aurora Nieuport 11 kit that I have found was in the IPMS Warbirds Conversions 1966 based on an earlier article by Jim Sage of Dallas TX.  Mr. Sage was the founder of the IPMS organization and still considered by many as the ‘Lord High Imperial Poohbah - Emeritus.'  Along with several internet sites Mr. Ray Rimell has tackled the job by making a S.S.W. D.I from the Revell Nieuport 17.  This involves a great deal of modification.  Today there are Nieuport 11 kits available in several scales so, it will be easy to accomplish this type of conversion.  I began with Eduard's basic kit (#8069) of the 1/48 scale Nieuport 11.

Step 1 - 2.)  Begin with predrilling all rigging holes and deciding just how ‘German' do you want this machine to look.  I deleted many kit Cockpit items and used replacement pieces from a ‘Tom's Modelworks' German Interiors brass set.  You can add the crisscrossed Stay Wires to the Fuselage Frame/Bays in the Fuselage Halves (PP A 1 & 2.)  Next I add the Fuel /Air Mix Quadrant to PP A 1. Then a Fuel Pressure Hand Pump needs to be scratch built for addition to PP A 2.   Also, you need to add a compass to PP A 2 just ahead of the area where the lower edge of the seat will be.  The small crescent that is the Instrument Panel (PP A 7) may be modified to hold one large or two smaller gauges.  You'll need to represent the Fuel and Oil Pulsator gauges, Tachometer and Altimeter.  While two smaller gauges can be attached to the Instrument Panel the others can be attached to the aircraft framework of PP A 1 & 2.  The kit Fuel Tank Façade (PP A 13) needs to be altered by adding scribed lines or a simulated access panel to its face to represent the Ammunition Box for a Spandau Machine Gun.  Next add the Air Intake Tubes (PP A 12) and the simplified Air/Fuel Mix Union (PP B 17) and add the whole assembly to the Fuselage Side (PP A 2.)

Step 3 - 4.)  The Cockpit is further detailed beginning with the Flooring (PP A 21) and the Bell Crank Actuation Bar w/Pulleys (PP B 6.)   This should have fine wire pieces applied to represent the Elevator Cables.  Next I replaced the kit Seat (PP A 20) with a ‘Tom's' item also adding his Lap and Shoulder Harness'.  The Seat Support (PP A 19) can be deleted and replaced with one built from small diameter brass- rods.  Paint these and all metal fittings mid grey colour.  Next I replaced the Rudder Bar (PP B 28) with a ‘Tom's' item.  Add the Rudder Cables to this from fine wire.  The Control Column (PP B 21) is modified by replacing the Control grips with a modified ‘Tom's' item and add a piece of fine wire to this assembly leading forward to the Spandau Machine Gun Breech to represent its Flexible Control Cable.   Next add the lower half of the Bell Crank Actuation Rods (PP B 27.)

Step 5.) Now you can unite the Fuselage Halves (PP A 1 & 2.)   Square the Fuselage Notch for the Elevator/Stabilizer Assembly (PP A 5.)   Note that the profile of this and the Wings need to be ‘Clipped' to match the Siemens Schuckert D.I Check your references.  The kit Rudder (PP A 16) needs to be replaced with a scratch built item.  Remove the Cowling Fairings from the forward sides of the Fuselage.  The kit Cowling (PP A 14) needs to be severely modified at this point.  The sides of the Cowling have to be straightened to match the Fuselage sides.  A new Face Plate/ Engine Support for the front of the Cowling can be cut from sheet plastic. Reinforce this assembly with sections of strip plastic and blend the Face Plate/Engine Support to the front of the Cowling.  Next, the kit Rotary Engine (PP A 15) is now too big for the Cowling and needs to be modified.  I prefer to remove the Cylinders from the Crankcase and shorten the Cylinders at their base ends.  This keeps the Head details intact.  Now replace them back on the Crankcase drilling corresponding holes in both pieces and adding brass stay pins.  This reinforces the whole assembly.  The Air Induction Pipes for the Cylinders needs to be removed from The Crankcase Face Plate (PP B 16) and then placed behind the Cylinders leading down to the back of the Crankcase.  Finally, add small sections of brass wire to represent the push rods leading from the front of the Cylinder Heads to the front of the Crankcase near the propeller shaft.  Next I added a 1916 version of the Spandau to the pilot's right of the center on the top deck ahead of the Cockpit opening. Don't forget the Ammo Belt Feed and the Empty Belt Tube.

Step 6.)   Fill and reposition new holes for the Rear Cabane Struts in the underside of the Top Wing (PP A 4.)  I shortened the Wing Gap by removing 1/64th of an inch from the bottom of the Interplane ‘Vee' Struts (PP B 1 X2.)  Drill new holes and install brass stay pins and attach the Top Wing (PP A 4) using a jig of children's plastic interlocking building blocks.  This will keep everything square and plumb as the assembly dries.  Now perform a similar reduction of the Forward Cabane Struts (PP B 31 X2.)  Next, modify of the Rear Cabane Struts (PP B 30) by separating it at its apex to make two legs that will be dry fit and installed in the same attitude as the Forward Cabane Struts.  Here I begin the rigging of the wings.

Step 7 - 8.)   Scratchbuild a longer pair of Landing Gear Leg's from brass-rod.  Now you have to Scratchbuild a new tailskid.  You'll need to decide if your model will represent one with an early or late version of the skid.  In any event remove the Nieuport type skid housing.

Step 9 - 10.)  Add the Upper Sections of the Bell Crank Actuation Rods (PP B 23X2) and the Aileron Bell Cranks (PP B 24 X2.)  These should match the chosen attitude of your model's Ailerons.  Since we're doing the Siemens Schuckert D.I, delete the installations of the various Lewis Machine Gun applications.

Step 11.)  Finish any rigging at this time.  Delete the kit Propeller and add one with a German profile.  Check your references. The new Propeller must be longer overall by four scale inches.  There are real wood Propellers available in 1/48 scale. Check with Rosemont or Sopwith Hobbies.  The Spinner can be modified from an 1/48 scale P 40 Warhawk item.

Serial Numbers: Batch # 3503/16 - 3635/16 contained 74 S.S.W. D.I types.

                           Batch # 3752/16 - 3768/16 contained 17 S.S.W. D.I types.

                           Batch # 1230/17 - 1329/17 contained   2 S.S.W. D.I types.

                                                                                          93 Total

This system of numbering aircraft is symptomatic of the sporadic deliveries that the D.I suffered.

MINUTES FOR FEBRUARY 5, 2003

Our President, Tom Deppe, called the February 5, 2003 meeting to order at 7:08 PM at Burt Chevrolet with 32 members and guest present.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Cliff Davis reported that he received e-mail from IPMS Centennial.

TREASURY:

Dallas Lloyd reported a balance of $3117.69 in the treasury, $736.04 belongs to the contest fund.

OLD BUSINESS:

Mark Persichetti reported that he had talked to Tom Grossman, the local Iwata Airbrush sales rep, from IPMS Centennial about the possibility of having an Iwata Airbrush given to the club on a temporary basis.  Tom said he would be glad to give the club one free airbrush for club use, as long as some mention of it was made in our newsletter.  We would probably get an Eclipse, as this would be best suited to our use.  Tom will try to get up next month to hand over the airbrush to us.  At this time, an air compressor was not included in the package.  Tom is also the sales rep for Zona Tools, and he probably will bring up some of their products at the same time.  Cliff Davis showed off the completed memorial plaque for Jay Mack that will be put in the display case at Colpar East on Saturday morning.  David Reinecke and Cliff Davis reported that they will be willing to split the cost on a replacement Alps printer out of their pockets so no expenses will be coming out of our club funds.  Issue was voted on and approved.  Mike Gawell was wondering if anybody had heard anything from the Aviation Society about their upcoming model contest.  Tom Deppe reported that he had attended a number of meetings at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum about their upcoming contest in July.  Because of their lack of willingness to any info and advice on how to run a contest, we would probably not be participating in it at all as a club function.  The contest will be held on July 31st, which is a Thursday.  Awards will be at 5:30 in the afternoon, and advanced registration and payment of $10 per model would be required.

NEW BUSINESS:

Derek Brown suggested that we could do a kit auction for our April program.  Tom Deppe presented Terry Tuytschaevers with a gift certificate to Colpar Hobbies in appreciation for all the time that he has given to the club.

SHOW & TELL:

Cliff Davis showed us the new Hasegawa 1/48 Myrt kit.  Terry Tuytschaevers had a completed Hasegawa 1/48 Vought AU-1 Corsair and a completed Revell 1/32 Grumman F-14A Tomcat.  Earl Hosmer brought in a coupe of A-4 conversions that he is currently working on.  Jeffry Osborne showed us a completed Fujimi 1/72 Junkers Ju-87B Stuka and a completed Hasegawa 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf-109E-4.  John Lassiter brought in a Hasegawa 1/32 Boeing P-12E that he has been working on.  Bill Stolte showed us a Renaissance 1/43 kit on which he was looking for some advice on how to build correctly.  Derek Brown told us that he would be having a model garage sale at his house on Saturday, and he showed us the Colorado Avalanche jersey that he will be auctioning off on the night of the kit auctions.  Mike McDanal gave us some clarification on the article that he had in the newsletter.  Cameron Lynch showed us a completed Hasegawa 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf-109G-2 tropical, a Tamiya 1/700 Scharnhorst Battle Cruiser that he is working on, and some riveting guides that he found on the Hobby Link Japan website.  Ben Fulcher returned with his completed Azur 1/72 floatplane and a Revell-Monogram 1/48 Dornier Do-217 that was under construction.  Mark Persichetti had 2 older Monogram Patton tank kits, 3 Heller Cadet kits of ships he is trying to complete for the nationals, and his older “Toe Tractor”.  Doug DeCounter had a completed Dragon 1/35 Panther, a completed Academy 1/35 Achilles Tank, a completed Academy 1/35 M-3A1 Stuart, and a Blue Water Navy 1/350 Submarine.  Darren McTee showed us a highly modified Hasegawa 1/48 Douglas Israeli A-4 Skyhawk that was still under construction.  Felix Jablonski had some videos of an air museum in Russia.  Michael Mitchell brought in a completed Trumpeter 1/35 BMP troop carrier and a completed Trumpeter Tamiya 1/35 M-4 Sherman and a completed Tamiya 1/35 Panther.  Cal Hawkins reported that he was going to be giving away lots of old magazines.  Jerry Cole had a display of books and magazines that he had for sale.  Justin Gawell brought in a 1/48 Japanese warbird.  Mike Gawell had a completed Tamiya 1/48 DeWoitine D.520 and a couple of Pinewood Derby cars that he helped build for the scouts.  Dale Summers showed us a Revell-Monogram 1/32 Focke-Wulf Fw-190F-8 kit, an Airfix 1/24 Sea Harrier kit, a resin product called Aqua Resin, and a couple of Airfix BHC hovercraft kits.

Earl Says:

Nats 2003 is fast approaching. I want to gather up all the completed models at the April (or May as a last resort) meeting, so please bring them to the March meeting. If you are SURE you are going to Nats then you can take it to Ok City yourself if you want. PLEASE box it securely for the long trip (see my article in January newsletter if you are not sure how) or I will be glad to do it for you as I have a good supply of shoeboxes. I don't want to have anyone needing to do emergency repairs to their Skyhawk in a hotel room! Thanks to all who have contributed time and talent to what I am sure will be an award-winning entry for IPMS/Denver-Rob Wolf! e-mail me at earhosmer@AOL.com if you have a problem brining your A-4 to either of the above meetings.

CRAZY GERRY’S BOOK SALE

Gerry Cole is reducing his reference library inventory and will be systematically selling off books at our club meetings.

At the March meeting, he will bring back what's left of the WWI books, plus a number of titles on
modern non-US air forces. Included will be books on South African, Swiss and German aircraft not usually found in US outlets. He will also have more military-subject aircraft slides for sale. Bring your cash, Crazy Gerry doesn't accept credit cards.

CALL FOR ARTICLES

My cache of articles is running low and I could sure use some new ones:  buildups, kit reviews, book reviews, museum reviews, how-to articles, etc. etc. etc.  Get those articles written and then either snail mail or e-mail them to me!

I use Windows98 to produce the newsletter so articles via email can be Microsoft Word, plain text, or PDF format.  Thanks!

Also, if you have a favorite website, drop me a line and we’ll put it in the Website of the Month section.
