HEAD’S UP!
This is your last
newsletter !!!!!!
Unless
you have paid your Dues by the End of the July Meeting (and so far I only have
20 names….). Please Contact Cliff Davis
or Dallas lloyd to continue your membership benefits.
Officers Elected !!!
All of the people that were nominated for officer
positions were exactly the same as those currently in power. Since nobody was nominated to run against
anyone, the officer elections are considered complete, with last year’s
officer’s retaining their positions for another twelve months.
I need articles !!!
As you’ve noticed, this issue is a little
light. That because I need some club
generated articles to fill it. It is
time for our membership to step up and write some quick articles for their
newsletter. I need information on
contests (and contest/show dates too!), museums, websites, kit reviews, book
reviews, how-to articles, etc. etc. etc.
I know several people are currently working on some
articles and I thank you for that (and a special thanks to Earl, Terry, and
Steve for supplying articles to keep me going)…please take a few moments to
finish them up and send them my way.
C’mon guys…I know you can do it…let’s see some new
names in print!
MINUTES FOR JUNE 4, 2003
Our President, Tom Deppe, who was a few minutes late,
eventually called the June 4, 2003 meeting to order at 7:15 PM at Burt
Chevrolet with 32 members and guest present.
The first order of business for the evening was Cliff Davis
reminding everyone that dues were now due.
Club dues are $20.00 for IPMS members and $22.00 for non-IPMS
members. Cliff will be collecting the
club dues for Dallas Lloyd at the present time. Cliff also had a number of handy trays and brush containers that
he was giving away. He also had found
an old fluorescent desk lamp that was free for the asking.
CORRESPONDENCE:
Cliff Davis reported that he had only received a newsletter
from IPMS Centennial.
TREASURY:
Cliff, reporting in lieu of Dallas, reported that we now
had $3586.19 in our club treasury.
$736.04 of this belongs to the contest fund. Cliff is also an authorized signer on our checking account along
with Dallas.
OLD BUSINESS:
None
NEW BUSINESS:
Nominations
for club officers were held tonight.
Nominations were: Treasurer – Dallas Lloyd, Club Contact – Cliff Davis,
Secretary – Terry Tuytschaevers, Vice President – Mark Persichetti, President –
Tom Deppe. Obviously, since all
positions are being filled unopposed, there will not be any need for any
elections.
Cliff
Davis brought in some additional kits that he had found from Jay Mack’s
collection and they were put on a silent auction. Mark Persichetti eventually took the kits home.
The
club also had a replica Colorado Avalanche Jersey that was put on a silent
auction with a $50.00 minimum bid. At
the end of the meeting there were no bids, so it was decided to hand the jersey
over to Derek Brown in appreciation of all the effort that he spent in obtaining
it.
The
issue of a club contest was again brought forward. The theme of the contest was to celebrate the upcoming Centennial
of Flight. It was decided that any and
all models could be entered, not just aircraft as was originally
envisioned. Some concerns brought up
were how we would handle the judging, what were the prizes going to be, and
where and when it would be held. Jack
Lassiter mentioned that this would be a good time for some of the newer members
to learn how to handle and judge a contest from those that have already
experienced putting on a contest. Cliff
Davis stepped up and mentioned that he would be more then willing to hold some
sessions at his house sometime after the Nationals to get this contest started. The contest will probably be held around the
January 2004 time frame. Some sites
that were brought up besides or normal club meeting were possibly holding the
contest at Colpar Hobbies or at the ship modeler’s site in Buckingham
Plaza. Cliff created a signup sheet for
all those who may be interested on participating in this contest and all
parties interested will get together sometime after the Nationals.
Scheduled
upcoming programs will be a slide show of the Nationals in August and a seminar
on judging in September.
Mark
Persichetti mentioned that maybe we could get all of the Tow Tractors together
for a group entry for the regional contest in September in Utah.
SHOW & TELL:
Terry Tuytschaevers brought in a Hasegawa 1/48 Lockheed
F-104C Starfighter in a natural metal finish.
Mark Persichetti had a numbers of kits for sale. Doug DeCounter showed us a Dragon 1/35 Sdkfz
184 Ferdinand Jagdpanzer, a AFV 1/35 Sdkfz 11, a Tamiya 1/35 Sdkfz 251, a
Tamiya Schwimwagen, and a Tamiya M-21 Mortar Carrier. Jeffrey Osborne brought in a Hasegawa 1/48 Aichi Val, his first ¼
scale aircraft model in 25 years. Bon
Nixon had a Tamiya 1/72 Republic F-84G Thunderjet. Derek Brown also brought in a number of kits for sale. Mike McDanal showed us a Mattel Hot Wheels
1/18 Ferrari F2001 modified with a set of aftermarket decals. Mark Litrell had an ESCI 1/35 T-55 Soviet
tank, his first tank ever. Mark also
had a 1/72 Pe-2 and a 1/72 Saab Draken.
Martin Sagara had a Heller 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf-109G Snap kit. David Reinecke brought in an Italeri 1/35
Jagdpanzer IV. John Holcomb was going
to bring in a Hasegawa 1/48 Douglas A-4K, but he left it on his car and lost it
on the way down to the meeting. Let’s
see somebody top that one. Jack
Lassiter brought in the new Hobbycraft 1/24 Supermarine Spitfire kit and an
AMTech 1/72 EC-135 kit that was highly warped.
Chuck Stout showed us a tiny scratchbuilt 1/72 Polaris A-1 Missile. Allen Espenlaub had a beautiful AMT 1/24
1957 Chrysler 300C cut down to approximately the size of a Corvette. Great Job Allen!!. Dale Summers showed us a Revell Germany D0-27 Safari kit and a
Panda 1/35 Bell UH-1N Twin Huey kit.
PROGRAM:
The
program for the evening was an informative presentation on building models for
profit presented by Chuck Stout. Thanks
a bunch, Chuck.

A NOTE FROM
DALE W. SUMMERS
Not to detract to Chuck Stout’s recent talk about colors and such, but there seemed to be some unanswered questions at the end of his talk.
The reason the sky is “Blue”, the ocean is “Blue”, ice is Blue and mountains are “Bluish” is because of water or water vapor being present in the atmosphere. Water and Oxygen have a blue hue to them in large quantities. While it is true that at a distance of several inches or feet water and oxygen appear to be clear, it is when you look through the density of several miles or greater densities, water and /or oxygen cause a bluing tint to the atmosphere or objects you are looking at. Ice also displays a blue tint to it due to the water content and its density, for example when you have a heavy wet snow like one of the last storms we had recently the compacted snow had a bluer tint to it. Earth has been said to be a “Blue Planet” this is due to water vapor and oxygen in the atmosphere. One of the things Chuck said was that color is caused by a cretin vibration or wave length of light waves, all atoms and molecules vibrate with specific colors, oxygen for example vibrates blue. In astronomy it is common to run the reflected light of a planet through a prism to try to figure out what atoms or gasses are present in that planets atmosphere. Many names of “Oil paints” reflect the color of the particular element or oxide used to make the color, Titanium White for example.
Another question that seemed to go unanswered is the effects that water has on an object. First of all water absorbs light or slows light as it passes through it. This is evident when you are driving at night during a rainstorm your headlights seem to be less effective. The surface has everything to do with the effects. Matt or Flat paint has a rougher less reflective surface than a shiny paint has. When water droplets form on a matt surface because it is a rougher surface the droplet is flatter and just absorbs or slows down the light as it passes through it, thus making it appear darker. On a shiny surface light is reflected anyway but the water droplets are rounder more lens like this bends the light and concentrating it in a way like a magnifying lens. A droplet of water magnifying the light on dry leaves has caused several wild fires. I hope this helps in answering those unanswered questions.
A NOTE FROM
PETE McQUADE, Member of AIAA Rocky Mountain Section
I am on the leadership council of the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). AIAA is the world's largest professional society for aerospace engineers. I'm also an enthusiastic model airplane builder--both plastic scale and competition free-flight.
To help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first powered flight and the subsequent "Evolution of Flight," our Rocky Mountain Section will be sponsoring an exhibit in the Colorado Historical Society, in Denver, from October through December of this year. This exhibit will commemorate the "First Generation of Aviation in Colorado." The purpose is to portray significant milestones in Colorado aviation--from Colorado's first heavier-than-air flight through World War I. (If we have room, we might also include the "Golden Age.")
I'm helping the Museum plan the display. In addition to showing photographs, documents, and artifacts, I'd like to see if local IPMS modelers would care to display appropriate models or dioramas. The Museum will display them with all due care and security, and give full credit to the builders. We will not be able to pay anyone for this. Could you please poll your membership, to see if anyone would like to have their models displayed? If so, I'd like to get an idea of what aircraft types, so I can see how the display will develop. Incidentally, if anyone has models of the Wright 1903 Flyer and/or the Wrights' gliders, those would be very welcome, too.
I need to get a preliminary idea of what models might be displayed pretty soon--say by the end of July.
If you'd like more information about AIAA, see www.aiaa.org . There's a page for AIAA's Evolution of Flight activities.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at this e-mail address, or by telephone: (719) 785-3147 (Work) or (719) 522-1239.

Maybe
we should rename ourselves IPMS Denver “Banana Republic” for those uncontested
elections that returned your present leadership team to office for another
term. We do appreciate your vote of
confidence, won’t take it for granted, and will do our best to keep the club
functioning smoothly.
Since
Mark, Cliff, and myself will be attending Nationals on the day of July’s
meeting, Terry will be acting president and running the show that evening.
As
was briefly discussed at last month’s meeting, sometime in July we’ll be
getting together to brainstorm ideas for organizing our planned January
contest. Anybody who is interested in
this, keep in touch with any member of the club leadership for date and time.
Unfortunately,
the time allotted was much too short but I would like to thank Chuck Stout for
his program last month. I had no idea
that Chuck had a background in professional model building and it was
fascinating to listen to him talk about it.
Speaking
of Chuck, maybe we could nominate him for our official recruiting
sergeant. Thanks go out to his guest
Dave Bathke and Jennifer Jordan for coming to our June meeting. As I recall, Dave joined us that very
evening.
On
a somewhat somber note, Cal Hawkins’ son, Mike – an Englewood police officer,
was recently involved in an incident where he had to resort to deadly
force. By all accounts it was a clean
shooting and Mike came through it physically and administratively
unscathed. It’s always a pleasure to
see Mike, be it at a club meeting or “Breakfast Club” so I don’t hesitate to
say that our good thoughts go out with Mike whenever he is out on patrol
To
those of you making the trip to Oklahoma City, I wish you a safe journey and
look forward to seeing you there at Nationals.
For the rest of you, have fun at July’s meeting. We can all swap stories when we gather again
in August.
