HEAD’S UP!

Happy Holiday’s and Happy New Year

to everyone!!

THANKYOU!

A big hearty thankyou to everyone who helped out with the newsletter during 2003 by submitting articles, passing along meeting minutes and the monthly “what’s new” column (thanks Terry!), keeping me up to date on activities so that the Calendar of Events isn’t always empty, and submitting any classified ads.

With that said, there are going to be a new challenge for the year 2004.  This newsletter needs your support every month to keep going and it can’t rely on the efforts of a select few members of IPMS Denver.  I couldn’t keep this going without Terry, Earl, Steve, Tom, and Al and I can’t allow them to be the only people who submit articles.  There are almost 50 people who receive this newsletter every month and every one of them is capable to writing something.  EVERY MEMBER OF IPMS DENVER WILL SUBMIT AT LEAST ONE ARTICLE TO ME DURING THE 2004 CALENDER YEAR!  It can be something as simple as a book review (not everyone can attend the meeting where you show off the book) or as complex as a kit buildup with the vehicle history thrown in for good measure.  It can be done (just ask Al and Steve and Earl), and I’m asking you to do it.  Come on guys, help me out here.  Thanks!!

MINUTES FOR DECEMBER 3, 2003

Our President, Tom Deppe, called the November 3RD, 2003 meeting to order at 7:14 PM at the Burt Chevrolet with 23 members and guests present.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Terry Tuytschaevers again brought up F-104 Starfighter pilot reunion in Pueblo next year.  He also had some E-mail concerning the judging criteria for the IPMS regional contests.  More on this later.

TREASURY:              Dallas Lloyd was missing – no report

OLD BUSINESS:       David Reinecke brought in a bunch of entry forms for the January club contest.

NEW BUSINESS:

Mark Persichetti mentioned the new release of a Curtiss JN-4Jenny model.  He also had a sign up sheet for judging at the January contest.  Mark then brought up the issue of how the IPMS Regional contests should be judged.  Some IPMS club members would like to be able judge their Regional contests in a format different than the IPMS National standards.  After a bit of discussion, a vote was taken and approved to have the IPMS regional contests abide by all of the IPMS judging standards.  Mark also brought in a guest who would like to have a model of an actual hot rod built by someone in the club.  Jeremy gave us some info and showed us some pictures of the car.  Jason Alterman stepped up and said he would give it a try.

SHOW & TELL:

Doug Decounter showed us an AFV Club 1/35 M3A3 Stuart and an Italeri 1/35 M4A2 Iwo Jima Marine Sherman.  Terry Tuytschaevers had a Trumpeter 1/35 Zil-157 Military Truck and an Italeri 1/35 M925 “Big Foot”.  Dave Bathke brought in a Revell Germany 1/144 Airbus “Beluga”.  Darren McTee showed us a new Hasagawa 1/48 Mitsubishi F-2A kit.  David Reinecke had a Hasegawa 1/48 Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless under construction and a Tamiya 1/48 Dornier Do-335 under construction.  Everett McEwen had a Hasegawa 1/48 General Dynamics F-16 being finished with tiger stripe decals, a Hasegawa 1/48 General Dynamics F-16 being finished in Iraqi Freedom markings, an Italeri 1/72 Douglas C-47 being finished in Arctic markings, a Monogram 1/48 Northrop F-5E under construction, and a new Italeri 1/48 MDD F-18E Super Hornet kit.  Jason Alterman showed us an AMT 1/25 Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle complete with working lights and sound effects.  Very nice.  Mike Gawell had some photos and a bunch of T-shirts that he was trying to sell.  Mark Persichetti very kindly brought in the holiday cookies, a large trash bag for the gift-wrapping, a number of kits that were for sale (In case you didn’t like what you received in the gift exchange).

PROGRAM:

The program for the evening was the clubs annual and usually dreaded kit exchange.  There were quite a few great models out there with only a few dogs.  I guess some members didn’t read last month’s newsletter asking for newer models that were still in the shrink-wrap with a minimum value of $25.00.  This was not the time or place to get rid of older models that or no longer wanted.

Prez Deppe

We closed out 2003 with a fairly rousing episode of the “Cutthroat Gift Exchange.”  The affair started out pretty sedately (David Reinecke drew the coveted #1 position this year) but then finished up with quite a few spirited rounds of “exchanging.”  I think most everybody went away relatively happy with their loot but unfortunately, as is usually the case, some of you used the occasion to dump off an unwanted “dog” kit.  May Santa have rewarded you with a stocking full of coal.

I forgot to mention this at December’s meeting but Hugh Letterly, through his “Loose Cannon” outfit, has a service set up on his website to match modelers with people wanted to have models built.  This is not limited only ship model builders and won’t cost you anything although Hugh recommends you have photos available of your handiwork that can be scanned in to show the prospective model collector.  If this interests you, contact Hugh at 303-343-06692 or find him at Colpar Hobbies.

Along with the rest of you (I hope), I am eagerly anticipating next month’s club contest.  As usual, I want to have a dog in the fight but knowing the modeling talent possessed by this organization’s membership, I can hardly wait to see the contest entries.  From the organizational standpoint, everything seems to be coming together nicely so it should be a most exciting and enjoyable event for all involved.

Happy New Year and good luck to all of you who are planning to enter the January contest!

The following is from our very own Mike Gawell and his perspective on the great day of December 17, 1903.

All

Today we celebrate a century of something that is near and dear to many of us. On this day in 1903, Orville, and Wilbur Wright using a homebuilt aircraft, with a homebuilt engine, and based upon observation rather than computers successfully launched a short flight of the first successful heavier than air flight. This achievement must surely be ranked upon those of the last century as one of the three greatest triumphs of mankind. Surely in the top ten. It has changed our world, how we live, how we interact, and how we keep the peace. The aircraft is now the trump card of military prowess. It is the messenger of peace.

That day they managed each to complete a series of flights, and while the fact was noted, it was not as hailed as perhaps it should have been.

I wonder if the Wright brothers ever fully realized what they launched. Sure they went into the aircraft business. From everything that I have read, they were not great business men, and eventually others passed them in technological achievement due to their refusal to incorporate new thoughts in aviation that proceeded rapidly soon after their achievement.

Despite that, the fact that man took flight has launched more dreams for more kids than any other, and through these dreams, the achievement of manned flight has led to the ability to transport man for good as well as evil across the globe. New places were explored, and the spirit of the pioneer was reborn. The initial races to go faster, higher, longer, farther were breathtaking, and one can only wish to have seen the glory of those heady days.

The future now stands before us, and the ability for unmanned controlled flight in now quite feasible. We can only look forward to more in the fields of aviation and space technology.

I stand ready to watch with complete and unfailing fascination as each of these new technological achievements are unveiled in their time.

The times now are as heady and glorious as then, and we as the citizenry of the world need to step back from the mundane once in a while to appreciate all that has been, as all that will be in aviation.

I raise my cup to the Wright Brothers and their achievement, and hope to see their flight, and those to follow launch the dreams of many more children through time.

Cheers
